CAVALIERI TO SING THAIS.
Denies That She is Engaged to an
American Millionaire.

By Marconi Transatlantic Wireless Telegraph to The New York Times.

PARIS, March 6, (by telegraph to Clifden, Ireland; thence by wireless) The presence in Paris of the beautiful Lina Cavalieri has again set gossiper’s tongues wagging. However, the singer declares herself absolutely heart free. She left Paris for St. Petersburg on Wednesday, where she will sing Thaïs, which Mary Garden will not let her sing in New York.
While La Cavalieri was in Paris she left a resplendent trail in the Rue de la Paix buying new gowns and new Thaïs costumes. during her stay here she lived in her splendid palace in the Avenue de Messine, and here I saw her one day this week.
“Yes,” she told me, “it is true that Oscar Hammerstein has engaged me for five more seasons, and I shall sing many new parts - just what won’t be decided until Mr. Hammerstein comes to Paris - but many new ones, that is certain.
“I love Mr. Hammerstein, and I’m in my proper place at the Manhattan Opera House. It is the only place for me to sing in New York. It is a theatre where the audience is thoroughly en rapport with the stage.”
About the recent Mary Garden affair La Cavalieri was singularly reticent; she also had little to say about her perfumery shop in Fifth Avenue.
