MARY GARDEN AS THAIS.
Another Large Audience Applauds
Massenet's Charming Lyric Drama.

Massenet's “Thaïs” drew another large and demonstrative audience at the Manhattan Opera House last evening. The charm of this work grows upon the operagoer. Its dramatic content is elemental and strong, its music both appropriate and lovely. The performance is admirable and the pictures all that could be desired.
Mary Garden's portrayal of the title rôle is remarkable for plastic grace and pictorial beauty, while it is dramatically satisfying. She is an actress of unusual skill. As a singer Miss Garden improves on acquaintance.
Renaud's Athanael is worthy of a sound and versatile artist, while Dalmores makes the most of his comparatively small rôle. The work of the chorus in the second scene of Act I, was eagerly applauded last night. So was the playing of the orchestra is the finale of Act II. and the already renowned intermezzo, Mr. Campanini conducted, of course.
