Reviews — The New York TimesFrom the New York Times - May 16, 1889 SYBIL SANDERSON’S TRIUMPH. Paris, May 15. - Massenet’s new opera,
“Esclarmonde,” was produced at the Opra Comique this evening. Miss Sybil
Sanderson, an American, took the leading rôle, and achieved a great success.
President Carnot, the composers, Reyer, Delibes, and Godard, and numerous stars, including
Nilsson, Melba, and Duvivier, were among the audience. Miss Sanderson’s voice is not of
great volume, but it is of the utmost purity and sweetness. She astonished the audience
with the ease with which she took difficult passages, and critics predict a great future
for her. Last updated December 30, 2006 |
