Background

Synopsis

     Thésée's son Hippolyte loves Aricie but is pursued by his stepmother, Phèdre. In a rage at the youth's distaste, Phèdre accuses him to his father, who sends him off to death at the hands of the monster. His friend Theramène kills Phèdre in revenge, and is led off to execution. Only Aricie remains to console Thésée.
